The Professional Electrician had been operating in the New Orleans metro for years. Good reputation, steady work, loyal customers through word of mouth. But word of mouth has a ceiling — and they wanted to grow beyond it.

The problem was stark. Their website had a Domain Rating of 0.8. For context: a brand new domain with zero links starts at 0.1. They had barely moved from nothing. No meaningful keyword rankings. No local citations to speak of. No optimised Google Business Profile. A website that existed but wasn't doing a single thing for the business.

On top of that, they wanted to rank across three separate service areas — New Orleans, Metairie, and Kenner — in a competitive local market where established electricians had years of authority built up.

Here's how we got them to $103K in monthly organic traffic value anyway.

The Thing Most Agencies Get Wrong About Low Domain Authority

Most SEO agencies would have told this client to be patient — that domain authority takes time to build and results will come eventually. What they actually mean is: we're going to do generic work and hope something sticks in 12 to 18 months.

That's the wrong frame for local SEO entirely.

Local search doesn't weight domain authority the same way national search does. Google's local algorithm cares far more about relevance, proximity, and business signals: how complete and active your Google Business Profile is, how consistent your business information is across directories, how many genuine reviews you're accumulating, and whether you have location-specific content that matches what people in each area are searching for.

A DR 0.8 site can absolutely outrank a DR 40 site in local search — if the local signals are stronger. That's what we set out to build.

You don't need high domain authority to dominate local search. You need better local signals than your competitors. Most local businesses have mediocre citations, incomplete GBPs, and no location-specific content. Winning is a matter of doing the fundamentals right.

Step 1: Fix the Technical Foundation

The website had significant crawl issues and wasn't mobile-friendly — a serious problem in local services, where the majority of searches happen on phones. Someone searching "electrician new orleans" at 9pm with a tripped breaker is not on a desktop.

We resolved every blocking technical issue before anything else. Crawlability, indexing errors, page speed, mobile rendering — all cleaned up and verified. This phase is unglamorous but essential. Building citations and content on top of a technically broken site produces weak results.

Step 2: Build Dedicated Location Pages for Each Service Area

Ranking in three cities from a single generic homepage isn't a realistic strategy. Google needs to see that you genuinely serve each area — with content that speaks specifically to that location.

We built individual, fully optimised location pages for New Orleans, Metairie, and Kenner. Each page was built around the actual keywords people in that area use when searching for electricians, and each contained unique content addressing local context: the neighbourhoods served, common electrical issues in the area, local licensing references. Not duplicated content with the city name swapped out — pages that genuinely belonged to each location.

Step 3: Overhaul the Google Business Profile

The GBP was half-filled out and hadn't been touched in years. Categories were incomplete. Service areas weren't defined. Photos were sparse. The Q&A section was empty.

We updated every field: primary and secondary categories, service area boundaries, business hours, services offered, photos covering the team, vehicles, and completed work. We also set up a simple review request process — a follow-up system that made it easy for satisfied customers to leave a review — and review velocity began building immediately.

Google's local algorithm treats an active, complete GBP with consistent new reviews as a strong trust signal. It's one of the highest-leverage things you can do for local rankings, and most businesses never fully optimise it.

Step 4: Clean Up Citations and Build New Ones

We ran a full citation audit across every major directory. What we found was typical: inconsistent NAP data spread across dozens of listings. Different phone number formats. Old address variants. Business name variations that didn't match the GBP exactly.

We corrected every inconsistency — same business name, same address, same phone number, everywhere — and then built new citations on the 40 highest-authority local and electrical contractor directories. Clean, consistent citation signals tell Google that this is a real, stable, verified local business.

Step 5: Targeted Link Building

Even in local SEO, backlinks matter — particularly from locally relevant sources. We focused on New Orleans business directories, electrical contractor trade associations, and regional publications. Not volume. Relevance and authority in the specific market where they operate.

What $103K Monthly Traffic Value Actually Means

The $103K figure represents what they would have to spend on Google Ads every month to generate the equivalent volume of clicks they now receive for free through organic search. For a local electrical contractor, that means a steady, compounding stream of inbound calls and job requests from people who found them while actively searching for an electrician in their area.

This case makes one thing clear: you don't need years of history or a strong domain rating to compete in local search. You need better execution on the fundamentals than your local competitors. Most local businesses are leaving significant ground uncovered — incomplete GBPs, messy citations, no location-specific content. The gap is there to be closed.
